Ishihara’s Interim Presentation

On 12th Feb, Ishihara, 2019, Masaaki Ishihara presented his interim poster in Suzukakedai Campus of Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Ishihara presented his poser titled “Analysis of the chronological change on ponds and wetlands in World Heritage Using GIS: Case of Luang Prabang, Lao People’s Democratic Republic”. Ishihara stated that there haven’t been visualization and analysis of the changes in inventory ponds and wetlands Luang Prabang since 2001. Therefore, he has worked on data collection and input of ponds and wetlands for the protection area of the world heritage site using Geographic Information System. And he is going to analyze reasons of the changes of ponds and wetlands as well as relationships between pond’s owner’s awareness toward heritage preservation and its changes.

In the Q&A session, professors and students asked some questions such as the reason of focusing on wetlands and the way of the data collection.

Q1: What is the reason of focusing ponds and wetlands in Luang Prabang in your research?

A1:There are mainly two reasons. First, ponds and wetlands contribute one of three criterions of inscription as World Heritage Site which is he unique townscape of Luang Prabang is remarkably well preserved, illustrating a key stage in the blending of two distinct cultural tradition. Second, decreasing tendency of ponds and wetlands were reported in 2008, there are no study focusing change of all 183 ponds and wetlands in Luang Prabang.

Q2:How the data will be collected?

A2:Data will be collected through collaboration with local experts in Department of World Heritage in Luang Prabang.
